I made the following statement on my last post about art being a reflection of society’s health, and I said:
It is a reflection or it is gibberish.
Art can be gibberish (although then it is not, strictly speaking, art, but a symptom of a pathology) and still be a reflection. In fact, unless it is a stand-alone freak, it is just as much a reflection as any legitimate art.
The gibberish makes a statement that cannot be communicated through interpretation of the art work itself as a legitimate work of art can. Much as a neurotic cannot be figured out until you reach outside him to see that what motivates him is an unrecognized hatred of his mother (which is probably the same problem as the artistic gibber-maker!).
Anyway, before I get ahead of myself….
